Facility Layout

Design & Advice

Health facilities have special requirements set by government for their construction. The requirements for such facilities are laid down in regulation R158 from 1980, as amended 1996.

Increasingly, the IUSS guidelines are consulted. The Infrastructure Unit Support Systems (IUSS) system aims to optimise the acquisition and management of South Africa's public healthcare infrastructure.

The Minister of Health has published, in terms of the National Health Act, 2003 (Act No. 61 of 2003), some of the Health Infrastructure Norms, Standards and Guidelines in three Government Gazettes:

What we do

Although we are not an architectural firm, we understand that the proper functioning of a healthcare facility is greatly impacted by not only the regulations but also the proper flow of the various functional areas within a facility.

We help architects with the layout, design, and regulatory frameworks in order to ensure the facility being developed will deliver services to its patients in the most efficient cost effective way.

This is especially important considering that not all provinces interpret the regulations in the same way. This is a minefield to negotiate and mistakes early on leads to massive cost overruns.

Through our strategic partners, we can assist with any aspect of the design phase, whether it be:

  • Architectural design

  • Draughting services

  • 3D modeling of views or entire facilities

  • Consultation on the design process or flow of the facility

  • Ensuring infection control standards are met throughout the design process
